Stevie’s first mix of the year for PHUK sees him, as ever, on top form. The first three tracks act as a perfect medley to set the tone of what is overall a really warm optimistic Mix. Just what the Doctor ordered in these strange times. ‘Virya’ Amata’s bouncy and plucky vibe at track 4 shifts direction ever so slightly into a deeper section beautifully followed by Tim Green’s remix of Eye Pads by Slow Hearts. The effortless mixing rolls through some really delicate textures before delivering us into Ruiz’s sonic electronica ’Soulseek’ from the excellent Sprout Label. Nosh & SJ’s ‘The Lost Man’ (courtesy of one of my favourite remix teams’ Paul Angelo & Don Argento) again just nudges us onto a new direction. The beautiful atmospherics and depth of the track accompanied by a chugging bass and solid kick drum - definitely a highlight of the mix right at the half way mark. Nice to see a track from legends Pako & Frederik too. Stevie is also no stranger to darker rhythms and this creeps in ever so slightly as heavier tones and tougher bass lines start to feature and take centre stage. Jerky, future funk then ensues leading to one of my favourite tracks from way back when by Tyrrell ‘Lalalalalala’ from the still amazing James Harcourt on remix duties. This sounds fresh as a daisy still! The last track complements and book ends the mix perfectly with a sound no one can deny loving from Nick Devon & Clawz SG with the mighty Township Rebellion delivering the remix. Tight and perfectly balanced mixing and track selection is what we have become accustomed to from Stevie but make sure you take time to really appreciate it, that flow and patience when moving between tracks creates a wonderful sense of ebb and flow not easily achieved. A wonderful 90 mins delivered from a master of his craft.
